In a past life, I was a keen swimmer. My teens were spent working towards various swimming awards, up to the grand 3km finale. That was my wet Everest; think less altitude sickness, more chlorine-wrinkled hands. Then came university, and early morning swims gave way to big nights out and marathon library sessions. Swimming became a thing of the past. Four years later and a lack of time, expensive gym fees, and I’ll admit it, laziness, have all played a part in the fact that I’ve not returned to swimming.

Then came my first week working in the Psychologies office. I was eager to get stuck in and keen to impress. Someone suggested I sign up as the Psychologies representative for Sport Relief 2014, and enthusiastic as a nodding dog on a speeding dashboard, I agreed.

The Sport Relief 2014 challenge takes place in March. They’re shaking it up this year, giving participants the choice of running, cycling, or swimming, all raising money to help disadvantaged people in the UK and around the world.

As it stands, the last time I encountered a swimming pool was over a year ago, and somehow I don’t think a week of lilo-floating and cocktail-sipping will stand me in good stead for this challenge. Sport Relief swimmers have a choice of 1.5km, 2,5km or 5km. I signed up for the 2.5km, which should be a challenge without finishing me off completely.

I’ll be blogging about my training on Psychologies.co.uk, and sharing the tips and training techniques I learn with you along the way before I take on my challenge at the Olympic Park on 23 March. It’s motivating that I’ll swim in the pool where I watched the best swimmers in the world compete during London 2012.

It would be great to have Psychologies readers taking on their own challenges alongside me, and I need all the support I can get! So if you are planning to or already taking part, tweet @PsychologiesMag or let us know on Facebook  using the hashtag ?#SR14.

Sport Relief 2014 events take place across the country on 21 – 23 March 2014. To join me on my Sports Relief challenge, sign up for an event and find more information, visit their website.

Laura is the editorial intern at Psychologies. When she’s not writing, she can usually be found under a pile of magazines, blogging at scribblinglau.blogspot.com, or watching wildlife documentaries.
