The food secret that could keep your brain sharper for longer — and it doesn’t cost a penny!

New research suggests that when we eat may influence how well our brains age – as well as our waistlines
We tend to think about healthy ageing in terms of what we eat: more vegetables, enough protein, fewer ultra-processed foods. But new research suggests there may be another question worth asking: when do we eat?
A small clinical trial has found that older women who limited their daily eating to around eight or nine hours showed modest improvements in some measures of planning, problem-solving and memory, compared with women who ate across a more typical 12-hour period.
Importantly, the difference wasn’t simply explained by weight loss.
Shorter window = sharper brain?
The six-month pilot study, led by researchers at Rutgers University, involved 47 women aged 50 to 79 with overweight or obesity. All participants were asked to reduce their daily calorie intake by around 500 calories as part of a weight-loss programme.
Twenty-six women were also asked to consume all their food within a period of less than nine hours each day. Most ate between approximately 10am and 6pm, giving them an average eating window of 8.2 hours. The remaining women continued eating across an average of 12.3 hours.
After six months, both groups had lost around 15lb on average, with similar weight loss between them.
But cognitive testing revealed a difference. Women following the shorter eating window performed significantly better on tests measuring spatial planning and problem-solving. They also tended to make fewer mistakes on tests involving memory and learning, although this result did not reach statistical significance.

There were no significant differences between the groups in reaction time or multitasking.
“Losing weight alone will ward off some of the ageing-related cognitive decline, and these data suggest that there may be additional benefits if you stop eating 4 hours prior to going to sleep and reduce food intake to 8-9 hours per day, compared to the usual eating window of 12 hours per day,” said Sue Shapses, PhD, professor at Rutgers University and Rutgers-RWJ Medical Center and the study’s principal investigator.
Why might meal timing matter?
Our bodies operate according to circadian rhythms – internal biological clocks that help regulate sleep, hormones and metabolism. Researchers are increasingly interested in how eating patterns interact with these rhythms.
Restricting the hours in which we eat could potentially influence metabolic health and inflammation, as well as the biological pathways involved in how our cells sense and respond to nutrients. Because the brain is closely connected to these systems, researchers are exploring whether these changes could also affect cognitive health.
“There was a modest effect of time-restricted eating to improve spatial planning and problem-solving and on reducing errors related to memory and learning,” said Shapses. “These outcomes suggest a better ability to remember information during everyday tasks and reducing mistakes related to memory, attention and problem-solving. Reductions in the eating window predicted greater improvements.”
The findings are particularly interesting because Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia become more common as we age. Women and people with overweight or obesity also tend to have a greater risk of developing these conditions.
However, the study does not show that eating within a shorter window prevents dementia.

What should we make of it?
This was a small preliminary study, involving just 47 women. The findings were presented at NUTRITION 2026, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition. They were not published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
That means the results are interesting, but far from conclusive. Larger studies will be needed to establish whether improvements can be replicated and whether they apply to a wider population. It is also important to reseatch whether time-restricted eating could influence the longer-term risk of cognitive decline.
There is also the question of whether an eight-hour eating window is right for everyone. Eating patterns can be influenced by work, family life, medication, sleep and individual health needs. There is no reason to assume that one approach will suit everyone.
But this study adds an intriguing possibility to the conversation. Looking after our brains as we age may depend not only on what we put on our plates, but also on when we eat.
And if future research confirms these early findings, finishing dinner a little earlier could become one more simple habit to consider as part of a healthy approach to ageing.
