Rob Reiner’s son Jake Reiner quietly marries eight months after parents’ deaths – as he reveals his grief ‘manifests into rage’

After enduring one of the most traumatic years imaginable, Rob and Michele Reiner’s son Jake has found a moment of happiness by marrying his fiancée, Maria Gilfillan.
Jake, 35, and Maria reportedly tied the knot in a small ceremony at the beginning of August, eight months after the deaths of his parents at their Los Angeles home.
Very little has been revealed about the intimate wedding, including its location or guest list. It is also unclear how Jake and Maria met or how long they were together before becoming engaged.
Jake previously shared a photograph of the couple attending a friend’s wedding in Las Vegas in October 2025. He also appeared to be wearing a wedding ring when he gave his first television interview since his parents’ deaths.
The wedding represents a hopeful new beginning for Jake, but it will inevitably have been tinged with sadness following the loss of his filmmaker father and photographer mother.
A bittersweet family milestone
Filmmaker Rob Reiner, 78 – best known for directing classics including This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally… and Stand by Me – and his wife, actress, photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, 70, died on December 14, 2025.
Their son Nick Reiner, now 32, was arrested hours later and has since been indicted on two counts of first-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty.
In a deeply personal essay published on Substack in April, Jake wrote, “I was robbed of so many things that day. My parents won’t be at my wedding, they won’t get to hold their future grandchild, and they won’t get to see me have the successful career I’m still seeking. It simultaneously breaks my heart and enrages me.
“Nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to lose both parents instantly at the same time. It’s too devastating to comprehend. I still wake up every morning having to convince myself that, no, it’s not a dream. This truly is my living nightmare.
“I can’t even begin to put myself in my parents’ shoes, but one thing I keep coming back to is how frightened they must have been. They were the last people in the world to deserve what happened to them…”
His father helped him understand what he wanted from a relationship
Jake wrote his dad told him, “You need to really think about what draws you to a person like this, and once you figure that out and break that pattern, you’ll find the person who is truly right for you.”
Referring to Maria, Jake wrote: “I’m proud to say I have found that person.” He added that he was grateful she had been able to know and love his parents before their deaths.
Jake had looked to Rob and Michele’s marriage as an example of a successful relationship. He described their love for one another and their three children – Jake, Nick and Romy – as unconditional.
The shocking call from his sister
Shortly before news of his wedding emerged, Jake Reiner spoke publicly about the moment his life changed forever.
He had been attending a celebration of life for a friend at Union Station in Los Angeles when his younger sister Romy, 28, called him. Initially believing he could return the call later, Jake screened it. However, when Romy rang again immediately, he realised something was terribly wrong.
“Romy told me our dad was dead, and then she said, ‘I can’t find Mom,’” Jake recalled. “And I immediately went into shock.”
He left the station and rushed to the Brentwood house where he and his siblings had grown up. Although his previous work as a local television reporter meant he had visited crime scenes, nothing could have prepared him for finding his own childhood home at the centre of one. He described the experience as utterly surreal.
‘Every moment I wake up, I’m reminded’
Eight months on, Jake admitted that his perception of time had become distorted by the shock and enormity of his loss.
“It’s been eight months. It feels like eight years at the same time. And it also feels like eight minutes,” he said.
Jake explained that waking up each morning forces him to confront the reality of what happened all over again.
He has been attending therapy to help him process his grief, but admitted that the pain sometimes “manifests into rage”. He remains tormented by the unfairness of what happened and his inability to prevent it.
No matter what further evidence or explanations emerge, Jake said he does not believe he will ever truly understand why his parents died.
‘Now it’s just me and Romy’
During the emotional interview, Jake repeatedly declined to answer direct questions about Nick or his alleged involvement in their parents’ deaths.
However, he acknowledged the devastating impact of his brother’s arrest, explaining that he felt as though he had lost more than half of his immediate family in a single night. Jake said that, with his parents gone and Nick behind bars, only he and Romy remain.
He also spoke about Rob and Michele’s efforts to help Nick through his long-standing struggles with drug addiction. According to Jake, his parents never stopped supporting their son or searching for ways to help him recover.
Rob and Nick worked together on the 2015 film Being Charlie, which was loosely inspired by Nick’s experiences. Jake believes the project was one of his father’s attempts to connect with and understand his younger son.
Nick remains in custody without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles. He is expected to return to court for a pretrial hearing on September 15.
The indictment also contains an alleged special circumstance of lying in wait and an allegation involving the use of a knife. If convicted as charged, Nick could face life in prison without parole or the death penalty, although prosecutors have not yet announced whether they will seek a death sentence.
Against that painful backdrop, Jake and Maria’s wedding is more than a happy family announcement. It is a deeply poignant milestone: a chance for Jake to move forward with the woman he loves while carrying the memory of the parents he had desperately wanted beside him.
