New fiction: The Girls

Evie Boyd is lost and seeking attention. She finds it in the rebellious, barefoot Suzanne, who hangs out on a ranch with like-minded individuals.

The truth is far more sinister; they’re part of a cult and everything is about to go bad, but Evie is so unhappy in her own skin that she can’t see the danger, as this cool, dreamy and dark debut reveals.

The Girls by Emma Cline (Chatto & Windus, £12.99) is out now.

The author, Emma Cline is from California. Her fiction has appeared in Tin House and The Paris Review, and she was the recipient of the 2014 Paris Review Plimpton Prize.
