The Moment She Didn’t Swallow Her Feelings

When her daughter texted, “Mum… this doesn’t feel right,” it wasn’t just honesty — it was a reflection of the work her mother has been doing. Instead of swallowing her feelings, her daughter trusted her body, her voice, and her instinct.

Moments like this show how our children become mirrors of our own growth. The more we unlearn silence, people-pleasing, and self-abandonment, the more permission they feel to stay true to themselves.

Her daughter’s small act of courage revealed something bigger:
Our kids learn how to honour their feelings by watching how we honour ours.

It’s an invitation for every parent to ask:
What might shift — in us and in them — when we stop swallowing our feelings and start listening to them?

The Moment She Didn’t Swallow Her Feelings
By Sarah Cretegny of Coach Your Wild

She texted me, her message, short and to the point…
“Mum… this doesn’t feel right.”

Everything in me paused.

Not because it was a dramatic moment – there was no shouting, no scene.
But because it was deeply honest.
Because she didn’t swallow her discomfort.
Because she trusted herself.

And because I knew:
The voice of our mother often becomes our inner voice.
Which is why I’m so grateful I’ve learned to rewrite some of mine — and why I’m so devoted to helping my daughter shape hers.

She could have kept quiet.
Gone along.
Smiled and nodded and made it all “easier.”

But she didn’t.

Instead, she paused.
She noticed the tightening in her chest.
She gave her feelings space.
And then she spoke, well texted.

That small act—so quiet, so unperforming—for me was a kind of revolution.

It reminded me how often we, as women, are conditioned to override ourselves.
To be agreeable.
To smooth things over.
To not cause waves.

But every time we do that, we abandon some part of our truth.
And the cost of that silence is far too high.

Bravery, I’m learning again, rarely looks like a grand gesture.
It often lives in the awkward pause.
The shaky “no.”
The choice to stay with the discomfort long enough to understand what it’s asking of us.

And watching her do that reminded me of the question I return to, again and again, in my work, my parenting, and my own becoming:

What would you do if you had the courage?

Because courage doesn’t always come with clarity or confidence.
Sometimes it’s a whisper that says:
This doesn’t feel right.
Something needs to be said.
I matter here, too.

I’m proud of my daughter—not just for what she did, but for who she’s becoming.
And I’m grateful for the mirror our children hold up to us.
They show us where we still have the chance to grow.
To come back into alignment.
To reclaim a voice we may have once buried.

So I’ll ask you, gently:
What would you do if you had the courage?

And what might change—for you, and for those watching you
if you didn’t swallow the feeling,
but listened to it?

Thanks for reading.
