My Perimenopause Diaries

Barefoot coach Lara Khalaf introduces to you her new diary series, aiming to look at all things perimenopause and walking you through her own journey, as well as the discoveries she makes along the way.

Dear woman…

I have been thinking for some time about what to write on here… maybe beautiful, useful, and meaningful words for you that are joyful for me too — and this topic feels so, so good.

Welcome to my perimenopause diaries, where, on a weekly basis, I will be sharing insights, discoveries, tools, resources, books, and more words… some might be fun, some practical, and others profound.

It’s intended for those deep in it, the curious ones, the researchers, the ones supporting a sister, a mum, a partner, a colleague… or those sensing that something’s up and want to understand what this wild and wise phase is really about.

And because it’s a diary, each chapter will begin with “My dear diary” 😊

I invite you to walk this path with me — to read, reflect, and maybe share your own words and stories along the way. Let’s rewrite the story of menopause and reclaim the power and beauty that come with this profound journey.

So here is a little intro…

I’m Lara, a woman cruising the depths of perimenopause. It all started almost three years ago when, in my efforts to better support my female clients, I found myself reading books, attending seminars, and listening to podcasts on the topic. What I didn’t realise was that these were nudges to focus on myself! Discovering that was a shock. An even deeper shock came when I realised I had already been immersed in it for several years. I mean — I was still in my forties… wasn’t I supposed to deal with this in another ten years?

The obvious answer was no. That’s how little I knew. And based on the many conversations I’ve had since, I now know I wasn’t alone. Sharing my latest discoveries has sparked many mic-drop moments and a flood of “Ohhh… now it all makes sense!” kind of realisations. For some, it landed right away. For others, it took time. Some even dismissed it at first — even when, from the outside, it was so clear they were cruising it too. But I get it — I really get it. The conditioning runs deep.

In fact, if you had asked me years ago what words came to mind when I thought of menopause, my honest answer would have been: old, undesirable, invisible. How disempowering is that?

And… if I was to ask you what your words were — or are — what would you say?

Now I see it completely differently. I see it as a precious second opportunity life has given me (us) to, once and for all, truly love and respect myself.

I call this phase the Peri-huasca journey — it feels very much like sitting with master plants like Ayahuasca, where what’s working and what’s not gets magnified and amplified to be seen, felt, healed, and understood.

As someone who actively walks the path of healing, beauty, and spirituality, I welcome it all. I am as interested in managing my symptoms as I am in understanding the meaning behind them — and this is where it gets really interesting.

Although exhausting and confusing at times, this stage of our womanhood is medicine.

So, my dear woman, wherever you are on the path, know that you are deeply not alone.

With love,

Lara

The Portal of She | Evolving Feminine Leadership

“She remembered who she was, and the game changed.” This Lalah Delia quote captures the essence of my work. After over two decades in leadership roles across corporate, private, and public sectors, I stepped away to found The Portal of She Consulting, a space devoted to supporting women in organisations through leadership and executive coaching (with a focus on women navigating perimenopause), corporate training, and empowerment circles. I’m also a mystic; my path with traditional plant practices and herbalism has deepened my connection to the feminine and to life’s great mystery. Currently moving through the wild and wise portal of perimenopause, I’m honoured to be a contributing author to Menopause: Wise Women Don’t Whisper. Beyond work, I’m nourished by nature, poetry, cacao, Mother Mary, and the love of my furry family. I’m based between the UK and Spain. May my words awaken something beautiful within you. May you remember. With love.
