5 tips for starting the new year
A new year is a great time to let go of your past and focus on a fresh start. Want to make 2013 a success? To celebrate the DVD release of the first series of TV comedy New Girl starring Zooey Deschanel, whose character leaves her old life behind, life coach and Channel 4's Embarrassing Bodies expert Dominic Knight shares his tips:
It doesn't matter where you're coming from; all that really matters is where you're going. Never live in regret with what could have been – instead, let yourself focus on the future.
Become clear on what your ideals are. If your next 12 months were ideal, in every way, what would happen by the end of the year? Set in place a plan for every part of your life, health, career, money and relationships. Everything happens for a reason and you are the only person who controls that force.
Become the best ‘you’. The moment you begin walking, talking and behaving in ways that are consistent with your highest ideals, your self-image improves, your self-esteem increases and you feel happier about yourself and your world. Live life as if you were already the outstanding person that you intend to be sometime in the future.
Visualise. 95 per cent of what we experience and feel is based on our inner communication. We think in pictures and have internal chatter, so you can't talk to yourself negatively, putting yourself down, then expect to feel comfortable about who you are. Condition yourself to think and behave positively by taking small steps every day – talk to yourself positively and visualise things working out the way you want.
