Are you a generalist?

Some of us prefer to spread ourselves widely rather than focus on one or two things in life. Take this test to find out which category you fall into.

  • 1. Do you find lots of different things interesting or worthwhile?



  • 2. When you really understand how something works, where it fits and how to do it, do you lose interest in it?



  • 3. Do you hate the expectation that there's only one answer to the question 'What do you want to be when you grow up?'



  • 4. Do you find it more interesting to come up with new ideas or ways of doing things than to focus in on the details that actually make it happen?



  • 5. Do you ever describe yourself as a ‘dabbler’?



  • 6. When asked 'Where do you see yourself in five years' time?' do you find it impossible to answer in the singular?



  • 7. Do you have a hard time choosing?



  • 8. Do you have a job that you can do well, but feel there’s something more you haven’t been able to identify?



  • 9. Is the idea of doing the same thing all your working life appalling to you?



  • 10. Do you have lots of unfinished projects and yet happily move on to starting something new?

    Hmm, not really that accurate. I have changed career path three times, each time quite major changes, with three different degree subjects and it said I chart a steady course.

    Wow- this has hit the nail on the head. I’ve always thought of myself as fickle etc. When it said about exhausting an idea after talking about it non stop for weeks then getting bored and moving on without having done anything and wondering why I ever wanted to do it in the first place, it really hit home. My uncle and step-dad made a bet for this very reason, on how long I’d last when I decided to move to France for a job a few years back. (I only stuck it out for the whole season because of that bet).
